My Super Bowl

I'm really not a very big football fan, but there is one game of the year that I tend to watch, just like everyone else. The Super Bowl. This year, even though my household's team was playing, I still only watched for one reason: the Ads. I have to say, this year, I was a little disappointed. While there were plenty of ads that I liked, there weren't any that REALLY stood out to me. I remember how ads used to be so much more high-tech, funnier, in general, better. I was really looking forward to seeing the Iron Man 3 sneak peek, and really, that was the biggest disappointment. Earlier today, when I was planning this blog, I was ready to say all sorts of things praising the ads that cost so much, they HAD to deliver on the entertainment. Now, I think I will just post the videos of the ones I liked best, in order that they aired.

M&M "Anything For Love" - I thought this was pretty good, but not necessarily "game day" good.
Hyundai "Team" - I actually saw this a few days ago, but I will still count it since it aired during the game.
Doritos "Goat 4 Sale" - Actually, I really did like this commercial. And it was picked by a public vote, so that makes it pretty special.
Oz The Great and Powerful - I apologize if this particular video has an ad before it shows you the ad. It doesn't make sense to me, either. I am really looking forward to this movie, so even though the ad wasn't that special, I am still including it.
Fast & Furious 6 - Yes, I know it is the movie franchise that won't die (just like some of the characters, apparently), but I will still stand by it. It is well known in my circle of people that I will probably watch ANYthing, if it has Paul Walker in it.
Doritos "Princess" - I am a fan of anything that has "manly" men dressed up in princess outfits.
Star Trek Into Darkness - This is actually the first time I've seen a trailer for this movie, which I am also pretty stoked about. Looks like this summer is going to be busy for me in the terms of going to the movies. (Again, sorry about the ad.)
Got Milk? - You know what? I really liked this one, too. That makes two Super Bowl worthy commercials so far.
Taco Bell "Viva Young" - See my comment for M&M's.
Kia "Hotbots" - Another pretty good one, I think I will make that three game-worthy commercials.
Wonderful Pistachio "PSY" - I would count this as four, except, it really didn't surprise me. PSY had to make an appearance SOMEwhere. I was amused by it, though.
Budweiser "Brotherhood" - This I will make number four, because it isn't a Super Bowl without a Budweiser commercial, and this one was really well done. It may not be as catchy as the frogs of the 90's, but I still think it deserved a spot on my top picks.
Tide "No Stain is Sacred" - I actually was annoyed with this commercial at the beginning, but the end of it was really amusing.
Mayhem "Flag" - Again, not a new commercial, but, boy do I love that Mayhem!

So, in conclusion, if I had to pick a top 5 commercials, I think they would be "Goat 4 Sale", Got Milk?, "Hotbots", "Brotherhood", and a tie between "Viva Young" and "I Would Do Anything for Love."

I hope some of you enjoyed the game and the ads more than I did!

It may not seem like much, but let me tell you, being able to say "I am demolishing pounds" no matter how many or few, feels pretty damn good. I'm not sure how to add this as a gadget, so I may need to occasionally make a new post just to keep my ticker visible. You know, if I start blogging so often that it disappears...

Anyway, to those of you who read this and are also trying to be healthy/lose weight/be more active/etc, remember this little gem: The voice that says you can't do it is a lying slut!

A Short Little Blurb

As you should know, I love movies. Without movies, my life....well, I really don't want to think about what my life would be like. Let's just say I once "watched" an entire movie in my head to distract myself from the fact I was actually in an MRI machine. Not a sandy beach, not a rain forest, nope, I chose to imagine Rent. So, since this blog has had very little mention of movies on it, aside from the list to the left, I think it is time for me to talk about movies I have seen or plan to see this summer. We'll call summer....May through September (for now). I'll tell you what I thought of the movie without giving too much away, but I don't think I'll grade the movies, since that takes more effort than I am willing to put forth at this time. But I will comment on whether I have seen it multiple times, or if I'd be willing to see it multiple times.

What I've seen:

Times seen: 2
Well worth the wait and the amount of hype preceding it was, for once in this business, appropriate. I would recommend rewatching the movies leading up to it (Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America), though it is not that necessary if you have seen them once. Having seen them all with my comic-geek friends, I honestly don't know how enjoyable this movie would be if you hadn't seen the prequels, so I cannot comment on that aspect. I have seen it twice, and would be willing to pay to see it more times.


Hunger Games
Times seen: 1.5
Ok, while I did not first see this in the month of May, I did rewatch most of it during the time I saw The Avengers for the second time (I was at the drive in, and it was on the next screen over, easily seen from my spot for The Avengers). It is a pretty good adaptation of the book (which I did read first), and what changes that were made, I can respect. One thing I did appreciate is that, unlike the book, which is all told from the point of view of Katniss, the movie shows what's going on around her as well. Some of the content dips its toes into the second book, but the scenes make more sense to be included in the first movie.  I would most likely be willing to pay to see this again, but it would really depend on my mood, since the movie  makes me a little emotional.

Happy Thanksgiving, and On Snobby Knitting Shops

Today, I am thankful for the friends who have stood by me, even when I was at my craziest (and let's face it, I made batshit look sane), my family for always helping me when I need it (and Lord do I need it), and for having "snobby" knitting shops that are less than an hour's drive away.

Now, I say "snobby" (and yes, I used air quotes while I was thinking out this post), but that's just because saying "Local" isn't always true. In San Jose, there is ONE local yarn shop (lys for short). And the people there are nice, but it is a little scary how much Cascade yarn varieties and colors they have (and now I think I've lost both of the two people who informed me that they actually read this. Crap.)

On the off chance you are still here, I will continue my information sharing. Back to the shop: They do not, however, carry my favorite maker of yarn: the elusive Malabrigo. Anyone who has met Malabrigo knows how amazing it is. If sex were a yarn...okay, that's a bad analogy, I appologise. The problem is, the company is very sporadic as to when it ships yarn out and what it ships to each store. If you find a color you like, buy it now, because there is no guarantee you will EVER find it again.

That was a bit of a tangent, and I appologise, again. So the next closest shop that carries my beloved is in Los Gatos. Not too far away, but to get there, I have to take the 17, and should I miss my exit (which, let's face it, I am more than likely to do) I am stuck on the 17 until I get to...a lot further away than I wanted to go. The shop is smaller than the one in SJ, but the staff is uber friendly and willing to help you find what you need, even if you don't plan to buy it from them just yet.

The next closest, and likely the one I'll go to should I miss my exit to the one in LG, is a small shop in Santa Cruz. I almost never buy from them, because their stash is pretty limited, but I love the atmosphere there so much that I sometimes just go to sit and chat with the store owners. And it is right down the cliff from the wharf, so I can pop in and get myself some chocolate covered bacon and chocolate covered gummy bears when I am done knitting/chatting. Btw - DO NOT KNOCK THE BACON UNTIL YOU"VE TRIED IT! I love it, and I don't actually like pork, or anything that comes off of a pig for that matter.

Now the BEST lys I have gone to is all the way up in SF, in the Mission District. The GOOD part of the district (yes, it does exist. There are many nice houses and cars to prove it.) They have all the Malabrigo a knitter in the bay could ever hope to find in one location. Which is not saying much considering how few Bay lys actually carry any Malabrigo....but I digress. Once again, there is the chatty, friendly atmosphere that has actually led to this long tangent that was supposed to be summed up in one short phrase: Snobby yarn shops actually are not snobby.

Stuff I've Been Working on (to Prove to You That I'm Still Alive)

This one's going to be short, but I felt a bit guilty that I haven't posted anything in a really long time. Especially not since I got Owen, my new laptop. And that was back in September. Anyway, to prove to you that I have been sort of productive, I thought I'd show a few pictures of things I've been working on. Although, I think anyone reading this has most likely followed a link from Facebook, so you have probably seen these before. Oh well.

The cover for "my band"'s first album. (No, you didn't miss anything big, this was just a random design challenge, and I really liked how it turned out.)
The Picture was from flikr, the title from a random quote, and the band name from a random wikipedia article. The directions may be posted, if enough interest is expressed. I used piknik to edit the picture, and I have to say, it is one of the easiest photo editor I've ever used, and the best part is: it is free. The second best part is: it is online.


That turned out bigger than I expected, and yes, I did select "small" on the image uploader. This is a picture of the most recent update to my room, since not much else has changed. I got the pictures and the frames from Ikea (as you might have expected). I may be replacing some of the wall art in my room in the nearish future, since I got a bad ass poster, and have no place to hang it. (Note: The links are not to the exact products, since the art cards I bought did not show up on the website. The ones on the link are from the same series and are the same dimensions. And I kinda like them, too.)

Okay, getting this up took longer than I thought, and I have a long school day ahead, which I am only mildly prepared for. I'll try to post more soon, and maybe I'll share some of the knitting I've been working on, since those pictures don't make it to Facebook. Feel free to comment, or ask any questions, or anything to let me know SOMEBODY still looks at this :-) Seriously, if people let me know that they look in from time to time, I may be inclined to put the effort in to put up some more entertaining posts, like I used to.

My (not so) Epic Day

So, today was Epic. Well, sort of. Well, kind of. Eh, it was actually pretty normal as a day goes, since the earth is still in its proper position, the Salt Shakers of Doom have yet to return, and the Android Dudes have not tried to ruin our Christmas yet. Wait, where was I going with that?


Anyway...


I woke up and took a shower. That's not the epic part.

I went to school, and realized I needed gas, but did not have my gas card. So, I had to go home and get the card. That's not the epic part.

Since my next class was at 1:30, and the time was now 10:30, I decided to chill at home and get my geek on by watching Dr. Who. But that's not the epic part.

(I just remembered that, somewhere in there, I washed my sheets, which I still need to retrieve from the drier. It's so cold out there! Wah!)

I went back to school to listen to Cynthia's lecture on Northern Renaissance Art. Awesome, but that's not the epic part.

(I know, I really should just GET to the epic part, but if I did, this would hardly be long enough to warrant posting)

I went to the gym with Laura to get my sexy on, and almost died on the elliptical. (That thing is an instrument of torture, I tell you!) While I did not die, and that's good, it is not the epic part.

Then, while Laura and I were getting our after gym snack on, a fat squirrel approached us. I told it that, if it wanted some food, it would have to take it from me. And, it understood me, which WAS epic, since I was speaking English (my Squirrel is a bit rusty). It took the potato chip I offered it, and ran off to tell its squirrel friends how awesome I was. Or it just ran up the tree to eat the damn chip. Anyway, THAT was the epic part.

Bedroom Overhaul 3.4: Now With More Storage!

So, for some reason, my dad was under the impression that my sister's husband is the master builder. He had failed to notice that, in the last 10 years or so, I have been the only person not paid by a company who has bothered to put together any of the furniture in the house, which includes the desk of extreme difficulty that my laptop is currently sitting on. I was just happy with my previous accomplishments, but now, I was annoyed at his oversight. And that means I HAD to prove him wrong. Not that it really made a difference. Oh well. Moving on.

Bedroom Overhaul 3.3: Now With More Stimulating Footage!

BEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD! So, with this blog comes something new (for me). Video. I hope it works. I got the box spring, mattress, and pillow top from Ikea. The bed frame I've had for...forever. My dad....I think he was watching T.V. Here is what the mattress looked like. My spring mattress, and I mean no reference to the season. I had no idea that a spring mattress could be rolled. The first thing I could decide to decorate was my window. The supplies I used were:
curtains, a curtain rod, curtain rod hanging things, a screwdriver, a hammer, a leveler, a tape measurer, a step stool, and my dad.

You can find the curtain, rod, and hanging things at Target; the screwdriver and hammer at Ikea; the tape measurer at Office Max; the leveler, stepstool, and dad in my garage.

Bedroom Overhaul 3.1: Now With More Content!

PAINTING!

Here we are entering the room formerly called "the nest". Be sure to keep an eye on the little ones, as the monsters that used to inhabit the area may still be hiding...



To your left is the creature known as "Boo Kase". It has traveled far across "the nest" to where it is in the photo, but it will eventually migrate back to the place it last resided.



When so many creatures gather to the center of "the nest," it is difficult to see the scenery. But do not fear, my friends, for if you do not move suddenly, the creatures will ignore your presence.



The creature above you is known as Fluffy. It is a member of the lamp family, and usually has not one, but three heads attached to a single body. It is currently perched upon the "Dre Sir", with which it has formed a symbiotic bond.



From this vantage point, you can see the bed which is the most important element of any nest. It provides a comfortable perch for the alpha creature of the land.


The final marker on our journey is the window. Ironically, on our next trip, it will be our first stop.


Have you got all your belongings? All the little ones safe? Bobby? Ma'am I'm certain you came on this trip alone. No, we do not have a lost and found location for you to check. If we find any extra body parts in the animal excrement, we will be sure to contact you.

Bedroom Overhaul pt...3?

So, I did not forget about you. I was taking pictures for everyone to see, and then, tragedy struck. My P.O.S. SD card decided to "lose" all my pictures. And, stupid me, forgot to upload any pictures from the last year.

There were many coins added to the swear jar that day.

However, as luck would have it, my sister married a useful guy, and he was able to recover *most* of the missing files. Jerry, if you are reading this, what I just said IS a compliment.

Anyway, as I had originally planned to post these in parts, that is how you will get them. Also, there are a few videos, and I'll do my best to figure out the best way to get those posted too.

Bedroom Overhaul, presented by IKEA

So....It's been a while hasn't it? I hope you did not miss me too much, but just enough to where you'll care that I've posted something new.

I've decided that it is time to redo my room. Really, this project all started with the idea of me replacing my bed, which I've had for a VERY LONG TIME. The bed itself is in good condition, but the mattresses replicate quick sand for its unsuspecting victims.

I looked high and low and found a bed I liked at Ikea but it came as a double. The bed I currently use as a clothes storage spot is a twin. So, it was decided (by me) that the room needed to be rearranged, so that the new bed, and a new bookcase (also from Ikea and some other odds and ends) could fit, without sacrificing too much space. So, the clean-a-thon began.

Any of you unfortunate souls who have been to mi casa have no doubt been shown my hell-hole of a room. Since I took to sleeping on the futon in our family room about a year or so ago, it has only gotten worse. Yes, I do mean it could get worse.

For the last 2 weeks or so, I have been diligently cleaning my room from top to bottom, dusting, sorting, donating, wheezing, sneezing, and everything else that is usually involved with a massive spring cleaning. Tonight, I entered Boss Stage: The Deplorable Dusty Corner.

This corner is the one place that has never been easily accessible in my room, no matter how things were moved. So, as a result, it has only been useful to collect dust. And boy, was there DUST.

I armed myself with the can'o'air I'd bought just for such an occasion. It had worked very nicely when it came to dusting the tiny collection things I have in various locations in the room. However the Deplorable Dusty Corner has proven to be too strong of a challenger. I was chased out by the clouds of dust and the taste of the bitterant used in the can'o'air (it is meant to deter kids from trying to use the air to get high) and am recuperating as I type this. I cannot go in there to finish tonight's challenge, but tomorrow is another day.

On the brighter side, the break will give me a chance to level up my pokemans :)

I suck at writing reviews for the simple fact I have ADD, and I often have much more to say than I can organize into a sensible piece. So, please forgive me for the mess I am about to give you...

Mark the date: I have completed my first Zelda Game. It was not the first Zelda I've played by any means. To date, I have played The Legend Of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

I bought Spirit Tracks on Dec 27, 2009, and completed it today at 10pm Pacific standard Time. It is sad to say that most of the others I have had for at least a year and am no where near finishing them. I am not sure if that reflects badly on Spirit Tracks or not, as it is the second of the DS Zelda games released, and by definition, should have surpassed its predecessor in difficulty. While I am nearly done with Phantom Hourglass, I am not likely to finish it anytime soon, as my interest in re-clearing the same f***ing dungeon more than four times has clearly worn out. Yeah, I'm talking about the Ocean temple. *Twitch* But since Spirit Tracks had no such issue, it was a breeze to get through.

Over all...I'm unsure of how I feel about this game. I defended it for so long against the hardcore fans who claimed that a Zelda game with a train as your transport would not work well. I figured that, sometimes, in the gaming industry, changes in the gimmicks of a series can be a good thing. I may have been wrong this time.

Curious on what I mean by gimmick? Hmmmmm....how to explain myself.....

Most Zelda games have certain...elements... that are common. I.e. Rupees. The Boomerang. Potions. Having to collect bottles to carry potion in. Collecting pieces of hearts to make a Heart Container. The repeat-three-times boss kill strategy. These are just a FEW examples, mind you, and some of the games have elements (or as I refer to them: gimmicks) that are completely unique to that chapter of the Zelda
series. Spirit Tracks did well to maintain many of Zelda fans' favorite gimicks, and it introduced a few new ones that made use of the DS system's features:

*Using the Mic to "talk" to some characters, to play the Spirit Flute (oh, I have so much to say on this topic...), and to activate the Whirlwind weapon.
*Using the stylus to move and fight.
*Using the Dual Screens to fight from two angles as two characters (almost like The World Ends With You, but not the same...)
When it comes to using (and abusing) the DS features, no game I've played can hold a candle to what Phantom Hourglass did, and I expected more from Spirit Tracks. They did well, but....yeah....

On to my tangent about the Spirit Flute:
While using an instrument as a major part of the story is not new in Spirit Tracks (Ocarina of Time, anyone?) it was made unique in that you MUST use the mic feature to operate the instrument. Let me tell you something though...Whoever thought up this gimmick needs to either be kicked in the shins or given a high five. I have not decided which as of now. Playing the Spirit Flute was, for me, the MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE GAME. My mic did not always register when I was blowing (mind out of the gutter please), or it would think I was blowing when I was not. Which makes it difficult to play a part that does not use tubes that are right next to each other (It is a pan flute, in case this did not make sense to anyone.)

If there is a phantom puff of air anytime between notes, it will screw you over, and God help you when you team up with Zelda for her piece. Ugh. I've never had a game make me light-headed before.

So...the shin kick is for the fact it is still to glitchy to be practical, and the high five is for making the game a challenge.

When the boss battles are less challenging than the mini battles preceding them, I tend to lose faith in the people who decided what content to include.

I'm not sure what else to tell you, other than to play the game if you can, but don't rush to buy it. I suppose, if it were to have a rating, I would give it a 6 out of 10; it could have been more challenging and the story was not always very interesting. And the Flute still had issues. Since that was a key part of the game, I am not likely to let it go anytime soon.

A story for you to enjoy

(Note: this is a product of my imagination. It did not really happen to me)

It was a dark and lonely bathroom stall which my laden bladder forced me to use that night. The light within had burned out weeks previously, and, knowing the custodian of my building as I do, it would not be fixed within the weeks to come.

Late the hour was, I having had to stay long after the majority of my compatriots had been released, in order to update the W.E.N.I.S (Weekly Estimated Net Income Statistics.) In order to accomplish this daunting task, I imbibed several large cups of the dishwater coloured beverage management called "coffee". It was in hopes of staying conscious long enough to earn the freedom from my cubicle.

As the need to urinate came strongly upon me, I crept down the empty row of cubicles to the dual stalled lavatory which we were afforded by our generous managers.

The illuminated stall on the right was unoccupied, as I was the soul occupant of the floor at this late hour. However, the previous user of the illuminated stall had neglected to adhere to the "personal hygiene items go in the trash, not the toilet" notice posted in the the stall.

I peered into the foreboding dark stall on the left and began to consider the possibility of waiting until I had the comfort of my softly lit lavatory at my place of residence.

Unfortunately, the need to urinate was too great, and I was forced into the foreboding stall. When the door closed behind me with a "thud", it became even darker and more foreboding than when I first assessed it. The smells from the illuminated stall on the right was overpowering, and I held my breath. The lack of oxygen present in my blood going to my brain eventually forced me to exhale the precious air I had saved for this occasion. I made my deposit and inserted the deposit slip before completing my transaction.

I washed my hands in the lurid sink and crept back down the row of deserted cubicles to where, upon my own, sat another cup of the "coffee" sat, waiting to make me go again.

I was advised not to make my blogs as long as my "Eye of the Tiger" post, so that's why there are two today. Read one now, read the other whenever.... Whatever, moving on.

It actually isn't new, but it is something that never ceases to amuse me.

Gomen! I have failed to blog anything in two weeks! Yikes! So much for that goal :)

So, to make up for it, I will give you something old, and something new.

So...for this year I decided I should get my own printer for Kristy (me laptop). That way, if my mom is doing someting on her computer (or there is a good show on tv) I won't have to bug her everytime I need to print something (or miss half the show b/c I am babysitting her cantancerous printer [it loves to spit paper everywhere when it is not getting jammed]). I told mom my idea and she thought it was good too, so we went printer shopping today (or, rather, yesterday by the time this is posted.)

We found a good looking printer at office max for $74.99. Ink Jet, 4800x1200 resolution, 30 pages per minute, ect. We asked a salesperson if it could be hooked up to my laptop and he said "sure, if your laptop has USB ports." Yup. Kristy has 4. He went on to explain briefly how the serial plugs are being phased out and USB is talking over. I was just thinking "Yay, one last port for me to figure out."

So we ask for the printer, buy it and take it home, making sure to ask if it already had ink (it appearantly did). I eventually got around to opening the box to put it together around 11:30pm, due to the fact I was cleaning off my new "work space" for the printer and Kristy all day. (Short explanation: My "work space" used to be my sewing table/craft storage area, so all the sewing/craft stuff had to be boxed up and put away to make it into my "work space".) I pull the printer out and put it on the "space" take the power source and the plug out and give the printer its juice. Now to hook it up to the computer Kristy. THERE IS NO USB CABLE ANYWERE IN THE BOX. I figured maybe the sales guy was mistaken and it was a wireless model. I could live with that explanation. I open the "User Guide" and look for the setup chapter. The first chapter is for "printing without a computer". Well, why the fuck would anyone buy a printer, then? Sure, it has slots for memory cards for printing pictures, but, where I come from, printers primary readon for being is for printing DOCUMENTS. Printing good pictures is a added bonus. I finally found the chapter (4) for printing with a computer, but it yeilds no info about how to hook the damn thing up to a computer.

I'm not dumb enough to believe that a printer under $80 magically "knows" what to print without some kind of input source from a computer, so I tear through the rest of the booklets and find the one called Quick Start Giude. Apperantly it's the one you are really supposed to look at, the other one is just incase this one does not make things clear enough.

Step 1: Unpack the printer

Step 2: Connect power

Step 3: Add paper

Step 4: Install Ink

Step 5: Install Software

The pictures that accompany these steps do not show a USB cable until Step 5, when one magically appears with no explanation. So, I go back and read the smallish print that has 3 languages.

Step 1 of Step 1: Purchase a USB cable seperately.

What. The. Fuck?

Soooo....yeah....

I don't feel dumb though, because two salesmen appearantly missed this step too, since neither the one who was telling us about it, nor the one who rang us up mentioned anything about purchasing the cable separately. I checked the box and it makes no mention of either needing or having a USB cable. So, for now I am left with a printer that can't print, and no time to get the said cable.

But I'm not worried, beacuse I have the urinary system under by belt.
